Canada and U.S complete the Concacaf Goldcup 2021 board of semi-finals after defeating respectively Costa Rica (2-0) and Jamaica (1-0) in the two last quarterfinals Sunday in the AT&T Stadium of Arlington, in Texas. On expected the usual “big three”, Mexico, USA, and Costa Rica, plus a guest, which this year is Qatar, but Canada decided it to be otherwise. With a goal per halftime, John Herdman’s squad put aside that of Luis Fernando Suárez they had not beaten since the 2007 edition.

Indeed, from the kickoff of the game Canada displays their intent to make the break, but with the experienced Duarte, Calvo, Borges, Guzman, and Campbell in front, it is not evident to win without playing the big game. As a proof, Costa Ricans have the advantage of ball possession with 56% for 489 passes (376 for Canada), but the number of shots, 15 (5 on target) against 5 (0 on target for Costa Rica), show how Canadians were determined to access their first semi-final since 2007.

Thus, at the reception of a long deep pass behind the defense, Junior Hoilet escaped alone toward the goal to lob Esteban Alvarado (18’). The physiognomy of the play does change during the rest of the first halftime and even the second one with Costa Ricans passing the ball without creating real danger in the opposing surface. And Canadians do not fail to take the opportunity to score a second time (68’) by Stephen Eustáquio, who assisted Hoilet in the first one. Canada is playing Mexico in semi-final Thursday in Houston (NRG Stadium).

Physically superior, Jamaicans use both sides to bring the ball up to Turner’s surface. The American goalkeeper, like his Jamaican counterpart Andre Blake, got several great saves to keep his cage inviolate.

In the fourth quarterfinal and second game of the night Jamaica complicate the task to team USA deemed as the favorite at start. Americans dominated the game as expected with a 68% of possession, nevertheless the shots on target are 5 in both sides. Physically superior, Jamaicans use both sides to bring the ball up to Turner’s surface. The American goalkeeper, like his Jamaican counterpart Andre Blake, got several great saves to keep his cage inviolate.

Finally, with a little bad luck, Jamaicans concede the defeat goal by Matthew Hoppe (83’) from the head after a transversal from the right. In semi-final, Americans are facing with Qatari in Austin (Q2 Stadium) Texas. The winners of these two semi-finals are playing for the title of the Concacaf Goldcup 2021 on Sunday August 1st, 2021 in Las Vegas (Allegiant Stadium), Nevada.
